What's going on

Yesterday was certainly a lucky day for me! Mom G took me out to breakfast for driving her to a clinic. It was great! I bet the last time, (aside from being on a cruise ship) that I went out to breakfast was probably about 3-4 years ago. Billy and I went to that really popular place in Cottam, oh, right, it's the only place in Cottam... Anyway, it was terrible. All around bad. Since then, Billy has been anti-breakfast.

Last night Billy and I went to the Keg with Mom G. She wanted to take us out for painting her house. The dinner was fantastic! The best I've ever had there, and that says a lot! We've been trying to buy the Keg's horserashish for a while now, and our server sold us a kid's cup full for $5. This stuff is unbelievably hot. I mean super hot horseradish does not even compare to this stuff. I've looked it up online, and apparently they don't sell retail, so we may have to purchase a 50 gallon drum of it...

So today, I'm waiting for Staples to deliver 'Windows Vista'. I'm quite excited. I was going to download it last night, but apparently that option is not available to us lowly Canadians. Oh well, the download time was 14 hours anyways...

I have to go to the bank to pay GST. Nothing like waiting until the last minute. Actually I quite forgot about it. I hate paying GST!

Speaking of bills, I have to call PF to see if he paid the taxes and property owner fees for Tennessee. I don't know if it can be done by money order. I may have to make a run down there... Hmm, I'll have to think about that...

We have volleyball tonight, and we are hometeam again! Three out of three seasons this year! Ugh! How annoying! At least we have a decent gym... Only 2 more months of volleyball, then golf starts! Oh yeah! I can't wait!

I'm about 3/4 of the way through 'Sons and Lovers' by DH Lawrence. It's pretty good. I want to reach into the novel and strangle the mother sometimes. It's a pretty slow read.

Well, I should get started defragging the pute and etc. in preparation of Vista. Have a great day!

Hot tub action figure

Last night Billy and I decided to brave the hot tub. It was a great night for it - it was snowing big, fat flakes, not too windy and cold! Very nice experience, here's pretty much our hot tub conversation, (excuse me if it is not exact):

Me: It's nice out here.
Billy: Yeah.
Me: The tub could be warmer...
Billy: It's 101*
Me: Hmm... We could pretend we're in Whistler or somewhere like that...
Billy: Yeah.
Me: Why don't you go roll in the snow, then jump back in the hot tub?
Billy: Why don't you?
Me: It was my idea, so you have to.
Billy: I don't think so...
Me: What you should do is get out, take 3 big steps, throw your arms out in front of you like a super hero and slide headfirst down the hill.
Billy: I don't think so.
Me: C'mon!
Billy: Why don't you?
Me: It was my idea, so you have to.
Billy: Umm, no.
Me: You'd do it for your friends.
Billy: With a couple of cocktails, I probably would.
Me: I'm not as good as your friends?
Billy: Yes you are.
Me: Then you obviously don't love me then, or else you would slide headfirst, naked in the snow down that hill.
Billy: I would do it if I had shorts on.
Me: What difference does that make?
Billy: I don't want to get 'it' caught on anything.
Me: Like a rogue stick?
Billy: Yes
Me: Or poo?
Billy: I'm not doing it if there is poo out there.
Me: There's no poo there, she poops further out, she's smart like that.
Billy: I'm not doing it.
Me: Just cup yourself with one hand and shoot your other hand out and slide down the hill.

This is when Billy looked at me briefly, jumped out of the tub, cupped himself, put his arm forward and did a downward dive in the snow down the hill. It was one of the funniest things I've ever seen, and I'm sure every neighbor could hear me laughing. Needless to say he hot-footed it back in the tub.

Billy: Are you happy now?
Me: Yep!
Billy: I have rugburn on my shoulder and hip.
Me: From the snow?
Billy: No from the ground.
Me: Next time you should be more careful!
Billy: Hmm!
Me: Well it was worth it!

We pretty much then just relaxed, then got out. What a great night. I wish I had it on video! That memory will last forever! I just wish I could show it to other people. Maybe he'll do a repeat performance on Superbowl - with shorts. Hahahaha!

Looking around

This morning I was hunting around on our computer, looking for a picture of our rear yard that I took 2 years ago after a big snowfall. It doesn't surprise me that I couldn't find it, as we've gotten a new computer since them, and although the files were transferred, I was fairly diligent about dumping useless pictures and etc. I am incredibly less diligent now, and looking around I see that we have many useless files, here are some examples:

- Jay's backloader program - that was for our old illegal satellite from like 2002. Probably don't need that anymore...
- Every Comparative Market Analysis, Open House Sheet, and advertisement written since about 1997. I think I could safely delete those files, especially the Publisher files, as we don't have publisher on this computer...
- Power Point presentation for Century 21 from 2001. Pretty safe to say I could dump that as I've been at Coldwell Banker for 3 years now...
- A resume. Hahaha! What is that for?
- 'Here's Elf-bowling'. Remember that one? The Christmas game where you knock down elves instead of pins? Very fun, but our current computer won't recognize the program used to open it, and it's from 1998.... so.... garbage!
- One of those 'get to know your friends' survey from 5 years ago, before Billy and I were married. Actually it was pretty funny, here it is:

1. What time is it? 10:30 AM Sunday

43. What do you do when you are bored? Read, watch TV, call someone, wander around our house
44. What words or phrases do you overuse? "whatever, BILLY!, I hate Bob, right, right.
45. A friend who lives farthest away? Sandra in Cleveland

49. Who will respond to this fastest? Not sure, normally I’d say Karen, but she sent this to me
50. Who is the least likely to respond? Billy, he doesn’t know how to cut and paste

That's pretty funny. Ah, memory lane computer style! The answers would be quite different now.

I don't think I'll spend too much time today purging the files. I have better things to do, like make lists, read, and stuff around the house... ;-p

Last night and etc.

If you're curious: the fondue was a complete flop. Terrible. I will not attempt that recipe again. Waste of good cheese...

KT's last night was fun, and I actually showed some restraint and didn't drink all the wine... When I drove up I was happy to see that SuperT was there, and when I walked in it was KidMania 2007. 6 kids under the age of 4... It was crazy only because there were so many of them, but they were all really well behaved, and provided some great entertainment. Oh yeah, then Bek arrived with her youngest... It was great fun, but whew!

The Other Liz is on her way to Jamaica now, the lucky girl. She deserves it, but yes, I'm jealous!

Speaking of jealousy... My eyes were opened a bit last night to a different perspective regarding someone I know. It seems that they live their life in complete and utter envy. Bitter, shallow, single-mindedness... very sad. I feel sorry for them.

I have an open house today, (please someone, please buy this house! it is the thorn in my side!). Hopefully my new novel will make the time fly by. You may not be aware of this, but having an open house is like stepping into a world where time slows down. 3 hours actually seem like 10. True fact, ask any Realtor...

I looked up 'The Great Gatsby' yesterday and discovered that I'm not a moron... I 'got' the major points of the novel. I also learned that when it was originally published it was not a success. It was not until a reprinting in the 50's that it caught on. I swear that sometimes books (fiction and not) do well because there is someone, (Person A), with very few original thoughts of their own, talking with someone (Person B), who is so proud that they actually read a book, that they tell Person A all about it. Person A wants to seem intelligent, as they rarely do, and buy the book, and regurgitate basically what Person B told them about the book to anyone who will listen. Some of these people are in the same category of Person A, and aspire to sound intelligent like Person B... until the book is a best seller. Ladies sit at their social functions with their floral print dresses, fancy hats, and dainty cups of tea discussing profound ideas encapsulated in this literary work of art... so on and etc. ad nauseam... Oh sorry, that was rather rantish... I hope you get my point... but please don't make it your own opinion, or I may just rant about you!

Have a great day!

Moving right along

As I pedaled to nowhere this morning at the gym, I finished 'The Great Gatsby'. It was pretty good, it kept me interested enough at least to keep turning the pages. Why it is listed as the number one classic book of all time? I don't know.

It was good, don't get me wrong, and I know that the book makes a few 'profound' points, but, it wasn't the best book I've ever read. Jazz was pretty good too. I liked it better than 'The Great Gatsby'...

Maybe when I'm done reading all 100 classics, I'll redo the list according to my own opinion. So far at the top would be (in no particular order, as I haven't thought it entirely through....)
- To Kill a Mockingbird
- Gone With the Wind
- Winnie The Pooh
- The Fountainhead

The list is looking better already! I'm going to spend some time online, reading about 'The Great Gatsby', perhaps I'll be enlightened and appreciate it more... I'll let you know...

So today is a day to look forward to. Here are some reasons why:
- Went to the gym, and it feels great to be done!
- Excellent coffee, I'm looking forward to my second cup
- Going to KT's tonight. For sure KT, Bek, and The Other Liz will be there
- Going to make fondue, I hope it turns out good
- Fresh French and sunflower seed bread to eat tonight with above mentioned fondue
- House is clean, but I didn't wash the floors, as we had pooch until 4 pm yesterday and there would have been too many paw marks...
- Wine at KT's... mmm...
- Picking up package this afternoon from Canadian gourmet food place, where I ordered extra hot horseradish and some tapanades etc., (for Superbowl... can't wait) I love packages (sing it all together now! 'Brown paper packages tied up with string, these are a few of my favorite things...')
- Going to the library to get 3 more books. All classics, I'm on a roll!
- Just being at home this afternoon with Billy (he's at work right now, poor guy)

Life is good!

Snow

It's snowing. With the 16*F weather it finally feels like winter in Southern Ontario.
The snow is supposed to end soon, and we've probably only got an inch today, bringing the grand total accumulation for the week to an inch and a half.

One thing that is a given in this area, is if there is more than 3 inches of snow on the ground, the evening is filled with the sounds of snowmobiles zipping by. We haven't heard that sound yet this year...

Do kids still wear snowpants? I don't mean little kids... I mean like kids in the 1st grade to the 6th grade. My mom made me wear snowpants every day to school if there was more than an inch of snow on the ground until I put the kiebash on that in about the 6th grade. I remember I wanted to wear new off white pants to school, (obviously a huge faux pas) and there was snow on the ground. She threatened that if I got those pants dirty or soaked I would wear snowpants everyday until the 1st of May. Hahaha. I still remember standing on the asphalt in the playground not wanting any kids to come near me.

I don't miss snow pants in the least. I guess that's one of the benefits of adulthood.

Random observations

When I finally hauled myself out of bed this morning, (it was particularly cosy and warm) and entered the main room of our house, it felt cold and windy. Yes, windy.

See, with the 'hole' and cathedral ceilings, (that sounds grand doesn't it? like there is priceless artwork and other intricacies on a monstrously high ceiling..) we need a big fan, constantly going to keep the basement above the freezing point.

I checked the thermostat and it read a balmy 18*C, (please don't ask me to translate into Fahrenheit... I think it's about Brr*F...) which I guess is okay for the morning, as it is set to rise to 22*C, but with the fan it felt cold.

I switched off the fan to stop the wind, as I sometimes do. Occasionally I turn the fan off just because I feel sorry for it running all the time such as it does, (yes I have issues with personifying inanimate objects...).

Glancing up, I couldn't believe the amount of dust and debris encrusted on the fan's... what are they called... the fan's wings? I don't know, whatever, you get the point... I thought moss doesn't grow on a rolling stone? How could that much dust accumulate on the fan? I haven't cleaned it in about 6 months, and apparently someone is correct, we are obviously disgusting, dirt dwellers...

So clean it off right? Sure, easier said than done. Last time I had a swiffer duster thing, extended to the fullest, (about 4 feet...) I stood on my tippy toes, on top of the kitchen barstool. Sounds dangerous eh? Well also consider that the fan it half over the 'hole' which is about a 12 foot drop, not including the barstool and the tippy toes... Terrifying indeed!

It's one of those things that I don't want Billy to do either, as he can be a little reckless. I think I'll look around for a way I can make a 12 foot extension, and avoid leaning over the hole. You can call me Mrs. MacGyver...

Poor girl...

I have to admit something. Occasionally I have been known to play in cyberspace, searching around for old friends, classmates, a missing cousin or two, and (this is the sad part...) an ex-boyfriend...

With all this information potentially available at my fingertips, who could resist?

I found my ex-boyfriend's (the guy I dated before Billy) myspace website as a 'friend' link through his present girlfriend's myspace site, (which I found through the radio station's website at which she works, known to be because I'm still friends with his sister-in-law...). Whew!

No, I'm not going to say, 'what a loser!' or anything like that, but...

In a moment of complete boredom, I checked out her site recently, where she gushes about how great her boyfriend is, and how lucky she is to have met him so young, blah, blah, blah... (Apparently she doesn't mind alcoholic, neurotic, narcissistic, bottom dwellers but whatever...) I hit the link to his site, and there was a little greeting from her posted on the 11th of January, 2001, 'Happy 6 years!'

Here's the absolutely funny part...
Oh, that's funny! You see I was still dating him then!

A few weeks before we finally broke up, he told me about her. (I didn't know her) Apparently she approached him at a bar, I believe, and she said that she was attracted to him, and would like to go to lunch, and get to know him better. Admittedly, it was good of him to tell me this, and after I kind of freaked out, he told me that although he wanted to, he wasn't going to call her, and we left it at that... (Did I tell him how many times I was asked out while we were together? and never considered cheating on him? once again I digress...)

We broke up the night before Superbowl 35. I remember so well, as I was supposed to stay at his house that night, as my room mate was having an uber-creepy out of town friend stay over, and I did not want to be there... I also remember the date so well, (January 27th, 2001) as the next day I went to a Superbowl party with a friend, and this guy who I'd known for years was there, and he promptly planted himself next to me, and I accidentally drank his rye and coke... I married that guy 14 months later... (ahhh, TLA, TLF)

When the ex and I broke up I felt a huge sense of relief. A weight lifted. A new beginning. I was actually thankful, and wasn't upset in the least, even though we were together off and on for over 3 years... Obviously now I look back and realize that it was one of my life's most important events, as this break-up led me straight to the nicest man, and the best husband in the world... (seriously, ask anyone...)

Looking back after the break-up, (which I did very little, as I so needed to move on) I realized that he probably cheated on my every chance he got. He was always accusing me of being with or interested in someone else, and that is an obvious manifestation of his own guilt.

So anyways... I feel sorry for this girl. I know what it is like to be manipulated by an older guy. I know the warped mind games, and bad behaviour of that ex. The fact is that she celebrates a date that isn't real. Hopefully it is just the date that they met. Hopefully he was as honest with her as he (almost) was with me. He was dating both of us on your 'anniversary'. I feel sorry for her... but it's still pretty funny...

I stand corrected

I'd like to think that I'm the kind of person that can admit when I am wrong...

'Jazz' by Toni Morrison is a good book.

I'm only about 1/4 of the way through it, but when I first mentioned it, I was only several pages in, and I had trouble with the writing style.

I'm really starting to enjoy it. The style is almost like 'slam poetry', or a verbal jazz. I pretty much have to imagine an evangelical speaker, or a lone woman on an empty stage telling the story. Very different from what I'm used to, but very interesting.

It is written in the first person, which I have always found annoying, but in this case, it is appropriate.

Hmm, admitting wrong? Enjoying a new writing style? Could this be personal growth? We'll see, like I said, I'm only 1/4 of the way through...

Blast from the past

I'm still under a cloud of sickness. Last night I had to cancel dinner with a friend, and instead I parked myself on the couch and had a cup of Neo-Citran. I then slept like a log... I am feeling better today, but I notice that I feel great in the mornings, and poopy later in the day...

Yesterday I had to go to my mom's house in search of a good novel to lend The Other Liz for her upcoming week in Jamaica. Whilst scanning the bookshelves I came across my diary from 1986-87, the summer I turned 13, (end of grade 7, the beginning of grade 8).

Needless to say, I threw 'Jazz' aside and spent a couple of hours walking down memory lane. I have some observations about my young self, and a few quotes from the book...

- I was definitely boy crazy, although I denied it, and accused other girls of being the same. Wicked girl...
- I was in denial about many things. I once wrote that I didn't care if I placed in track and field, because school was more important, and two days later I was overjoyed to have placed in high jump and shot put. Weeks later I was also incredibly disappointed when I performed poorly at the regional meet.
- I constantly had issues with my 'best friend'. It took me years to realize who my real friends were and are.
- I was dramatic, and exaggerated a lot, (not much has changed there!).
- I was a terrible, awful atrocious speller, (again, not much has changed there, except the advent of spell checker!).
- I had body image issues even at that age. How sad is that? Looking back I wish I was more accepting of myself.

Here is an excerpt from September 28th, 1986. It was my first (out of 4) bout of food poisoning...

Today Shaylene went home early because I didn't feel well. For breakfast I had bacon and a pogo dog. (BLAH) At about 2:30 pm I barfed outside of mom and dad's bedroom. 3 times in the same spot! So I stayed in the bathroom. John and Debbie A (parent's friends...) came over right at dinner!!! Mom made me eat some. But 10 minutes later I made a mad dash for the bathroom and barfed again. Later Mom even moved the TV in the bathroom and we watched 'Murder She Wrote'. I barfed again. Well I think you got my point. I doubt I'm going to school tomorrow.

I laughed my ass off when I read that. I remember it like yesterday. What a great mom to sit in the bathroom with me and watch a 13 inch black and white TV. My friend Shay also ate the tainted pogo dog and was sick as well...

The last excerpt I'm going to share today was written January 1st, 1987.

I also started my diet today! I had- a regular dinner (what exactly is that?)
- Diet Coke
- four pieces of dry toast
- 1 gummy worm
Is that good?

Hahaha. Again! Not much has changed about my eating and dieting habits. What a moron!

So looking back I was not a great kid. I was selfish, mean hearted, and jealous. If only we could go back, there would be so many things I would do differently. I wonder if when I look back at this journal in 20 years I'll feel the same.... I hope not!

Not much

It's Sunday night, and it's just me and the pooch. Billy has gone to a friend's house to watch the football game, and I'm happy to at home.

I haven't felt well the last few days, and I'm a big sick wuss. I don't like not feeling well, (does anyone?) I missed the birthday dinners last night, and was in bed, asleep by 9:30 pm. Ugh.

I haven't done anything this week-end, except finish the 5th Harry Potter book for the second time. It took a few days, but hey, I was feeling crappy and its almost 800 pages long. So now I'm on to Toni Morrison's 'Jazz'. I was feeling so inspired after 'To Kill A Mockingbird', and now this, ugh, it's painful, and I'm having trouble concentrating. Bad memories of 'Satanic Verses' fill my head... ugh.... I hope the 'Great Gatsby' is better, it's the only reason I'm still tuning pages on Jazz... to get to the next good read...

So this week I hope to:
- get my passport issue resolved, as my 'guarantor' was in New Orleans and now St. Martin's, but he's coming back sometime this week.
- to have dinner tomorrow with a friend, possibly two.
- to visit a friend's house who just got a new computer and dog.
- see how my out of town buyers are doing on the sale of their home.
- email and harass several hundred agents regarding my listing in Kingsville
- increase my daily cardio to an hour... I'm on a nasty plateau...
- feel better!

Not much really, not curing cancer, not holding a benefit for homeless younameits... hmm, maybe I should aim higher... I think about it...

Messy houses

Today is Friday, today is the day that I clean the house. It usually takes about 4 or more hours depending which projects I self impose.

So anyway... I realize that I have the supreme luxury of working from home, and actually not working that hard or often. I therefore absolutely have the time to do things around the house that working families can't always accomplish. Unless someone's home is for sale, (and even then, there are occasional extenuating circumstances) I try not to judge people based on their housekeeping skills.

I clean on Fridays because I love the idea that Billy can come home from work, and aside from checking the hot tub, he can relax and enjoy the week-end, (not so much during the summer, as there is always something to do outside...) I like the fact that the house is clean. I feel more comfortable, and I can laze about the house guilt free (see that's what it's really about - right?)

The house is by far not perfect. Closets are always an issue, we have a chronically messy junk draw in the kitchen, and impossible to reach windows, walls and ceilings that need scaffolding and a brave disposition to attempt to wash and dust. It's just clean enough to satisfy my own personal anal-ness and within our comfort level.

Years back during winters, I lived with a friend. He had a family member who he was always giving money to, so he decided she may as well clean the house to earn it. I think she came once every two weeks. Now you have to understand, this friend was rarely home, and I pretty much stuck to my attic bedroom, the kitchen, and the bathroom. It was never terribly messy. It was nice not to have to vacuum, clean the shower or wash the floor. Luxury. This housekeeper got off pretty easy.

One time a 'friend' came over and after she used the bathroom she came at me with her index finger raised in front of her, and shoved it in my face. 'This" she said, 'is the dust from the rim of your bathtub.' Of course there was a little of dust on her finger. I think I was at a time in my life where I was not easily offended, because I don't recall being upset, but upon digesting this memory, if that happened today, I would most likely go off like a rocket.

Some thoughts include:
- So, you had to move the shower curtain to get to the dust, how sad are you?
- Were you looking for dust, because I can show you more behind the dryer!
- I'd like to go through your house with a white glove.
- We have a housekeeper, she must have missed it, or is due to clean it soon.
- You brag about how 'clean' you are, but it is because you are trying to compensate for all the things that you're not? like nice, skinny, smart, attractive, a good friend, and have hobbies aside from 'cleaning'?

One time she said to me that in her opinion, plants are filthy. Do you think I'm an idiot? You just pretty much said to my face that you think our house is dirty, as we have at least 30 houseplants. No tack, no grace or couth. She must really think that I'm terminally dense! Out for a walk once we were going to pop by with our puppy. She said it would be great if we could stop over, but they didn't have anything to tie the puppy up with outside. - Oh right, you're too clean to have a dog in your house for an hour! Right, we're disgusting dirt dwellers... good thing we have her in our lives as a standard of cleanliness!

I'm happy to be clean enough for us to live and enjoy our house. I'm proud of our home. I'm not trying to impress anyone. I'm not judging you because of a little dust or some dishes in the sink, (especially if you have young kids!) Enjoy life, it's too short to spend bleaching toilets.

Musings

I'm not feeling very well today. I'm fighting something, and I hope it doesn't lead to what is going around. I hate feeling sick. I kind of feel like I have a two glasses of wine buzz, but with a sore throat. Hmm, I think I have to do an aromatherapy intervention...

Yesterday I borrowed 3 books from the library, and I couldn't help but dive into, and once again, more devour, than read, 'Winnie The Pooh'. I do recall reading it as a child, as I knew most of the stories.

I have to say that I absolutely love A.A. Milne and his characters. It brings back warm fuzzy memories of my maternal grandmother... and she wasn't exactly the warm fuzzy type, more of a flaming red haired, eccentric, romantic drinker/smoker... anyway... She loved all things English, and she was the one that introduced me to (many things...) A.A. Milne.

I love simple, humble characters, and if you have never read anything by A.A. Milne, I suggest you do.

If you know me at all, you may know that I love to eat. I feel faint if I go 5 hours without eating, and Billy would say that I'm exaggerating... I can only go 4 hours... This is a constant 'joke' between Billy and I. He doesn't understand... So last night, before bowling, I read him a tiny excerpt from Winnie the Pooh to prove to him I'm not alone...
*************
"When you wake up in the morning, Pooh," said Piglet at last, "what's the first thing you say to yourself?"
"What's for breakfast?" said Pooh. "What do you say Piglet?"
"I say, I wonder what's going to happen exciting today?" said Piglet.
Pooh nodded thoughtfully.
"It's the same thing," he said.
*************
I could not have said it better myself!

Snow

Here is a picture of Halia on our patio today, in our most recent snowfall. This is also the most snow we've had since mid-October. That's pretty sad! This is Ontario, although we live in the 'Banana Belt' as opposed to 2 hours away, that's the 'Snow Belt'... As you can see it's less than an inch. It certainly has been a strange Winter. I feel for all the snowmobilers and skiers...

Scathing scatherings

So in my quest to avoid the TV, and read more, I recently started my 5th book of the year. It is written by a fairly well known author, and I had high expectations, as I've read perhaps 5 of her novels in the years past.

This book sucked. (You would think that I would have something more clever to say, seeing as I'm so well read, eh? nope!) I couldn't get past the third page. It was full of witty dialogue, and even in the first 3 pages the author, through her characters, expressed some social and political views.

I say save it. This is a murder mystery, involving police, FBI, and Other Important Bureaucracies. Express your views elsewhere, just entertain me. The witty, chatty dialogue teeming with professional slang, the author gives the impression that she desperately needs to establish to the reader that the characters have a history. Again, save it. Most people that read also have developed the skill of reading between the lines. We can understand that your characters have known each other for years without the author blatantly shoving it in my face. It makes me feel that the author thinks I'm a moron.

I can't recall a time, aside from University textbooks, that I have not finished a book. (okay, Lord of the Rings part 3 is still waiting to be finished... but that's different... I'm not waiting with baited breath to uncover the ending when I've of course seen the movie...) I've had it with stupid books. From now on, I will not waste my time with a novel when I feel that the author is talking down to their readers. Ugh!

So I've moved on the reading the second to last book in the Harry Potter series - The Order of The Phoenix. As I mentioned before, I inhaled it, and it's plot didn't stick in my head. I don't mind rereading novels, but in the future I shall try to read slower.

After I finish this book, I'm back to classics, so very hopeful after reading 'To Kill A Mockingbird' I think today I'll check out: Jazz by Toni Morrison, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Winnie the Pooh, by A.A. Milne. Those sound pretty good. I'm fairly sure that I read Winnie the Pooh, but I'll get it just in case, but I'm quite well read when it concerns to A.A. Milne, (I dare you to ask me to recite one of his poems...)

So anyway, life is good. Billy just purchased the newest version of World of Warcraft, which means I'll have the couch to myself this week-end to read.

Oh, also, Billy worked late last night, so I flipped between Nova and American Idol, while reading Harry Potter. I now remember how my Dad would watch Nova. It also makes me remember how much I miss my subscription to 'Discover' magazine... I should get an online subscription... better for the environment... Hey, I'm trying!

- Hot tub with Billy, hopefully tonight if its not raining...

- Not a complete list! - Life is good!

So much to talk about

Where to begin?

I, and most other of our group of girls went to The Other Liz's on Thursday night. It was great, but I forgot the brie dip. Dumbass. There were six of us, and we consumed 3 bottles of wine, however, KT didn't have any SuperT had only 1 glass, DD, (Not Divine Divorcee) had a couple of Caesars - no wine, and Rach maybe had 2 glasses, and TOL perhaps 3 glasses. That means I drank pretty much 2 bottles... Needless to say I struggled on Friday to clean the house and function as a normal human being. Great time though, can't wait to do it again, minus the excessive consumption...

We left at 6 am on Saturday to go to Billy's cousin's near London. I didn't know that we were taking the car, and did not gas up the night before. Needless to say, there's not too many gas stations open at 6 am in the small stick towns that we drive through to get to the 401. Ask Billy if he believes that you can drive more then 10 kms further when the car says '0 kms to empty'. Ask Billy if he likes walking along the side of the 401 when it is 6:30 am, 0*C, windy and raining... That poor man. At least we were only 2 kms from the service station... Ah, lesson learned! Good husband for not freaking out! Good husband for recovering from super poopy start to the day, and enjoying the week-end after all!
Check Spelling
If you are in need of a good laugh and some serious fun, I highly recommend watching 5 and 6 year olds play hockey. Good God it's funny. So cute.

We left London at 8am on Sunday so I could get back for my out of town buyers. Ugh, they were 45 minutes late... It's all good though. Open house after that, and dinner at Mom G's last night.

All in all, it was a busy, fun week-end. I'm looking forward to some couch time. I'd also like to say that 'To Kill A Mockingbird' was one of the best books I've ever read, (I've read a few in my life...) I loved the writing style, the story, characters and the diction. Just excellent. I only wish that all the classics were so good! (Sandra Brown novel I read at the open house yesterday, Not So Good, it, in fact, sucked!)

The beginning, the end, part 1

We used to wonder if there was ever going to be time when we wouldn't be friends.

Every Thursday night we would meet at the dirtiest and friendliest pub, conveniently located in the middle of nowhere. Not to say that we wouldn't see each other on the week-end at a club, or during the week for an impromptu run to the mall. It was just that every Thursday, we all would meet at this little, cosy, hole in the wall, infallibly.

Others would join us, and were well received, but decidedly, in our hearts, we knew that they were outsiders. There were six of us. Of course in this picture there are five, one was a little busy, but we always understood, didn't we?

We were known and called ourselves by several names over the years. Not to be inclusive or exclusive, but simply because it was easier. Once when one girl was questioned by her mother where she went every week, she simply replied, 'to church'. That one stuck, and to some degree, still exists. It was easier to ask another if they were attending this week, then it was to ask them if there were attending -insert- place, time, and date.

I distinctly recall discussing over our beers and whiskeys about this group of older women on 'Oprah' who had been meeting weekly for over 30 years. For no purpose, just because they were friends. We were sure that would be us. Come back in 30 years. You'll see.

It started well over a decade ago. 'Our place' was now open for evening cocktails. There were admirers, one night stands, fabulously intoxicated bartenders, crazies, co-workers, old elementary and highschool friends, drunks, lost travelers, and flat ass whores. We weeded through the mess of them and found ourselves.

Our table was always saved, but open to anyone. Within a year, we knew we had become something special. Something beyond the revolving doors of friendships. So we thought.

I can't comment... so I'll post

It seems that I am unable to post comments on other's blogs, and some people who don't have blogs: should, so I shall post...

DD: I'm so very happy that you lurk. You are probably the coolest chick I've never met, (in a formally geeky way of course...) If you have the unfortunate circumstance of ever being in the Detroit Metro Area, let me know and I'll take you out for some fabulous Mexican. I'm very sorry to hear about your friends' recent loss. I've been there myself, and please pass along my condolences.

Beth: Please post more. You are an excellent writer, and your wit and observances always make my day. Make the time to share your life on the internet.

KT: You better get a blog. I know that you have crazy, funny things to write about, so get on it.

TSO: (not mine... but that is her AKA) You too, see above.

Okay, I feel better now. Thanks y'all!

Taking care of business

Let's see...

Today I have:
- Taken my mom to the hospital for a little procedure... it's all good. In and out within an hour! Way to go Ontario health system!
- Printed documentation necessary to filing for a lost passport and application for a new passport.
- Called the Kingsville detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police
- Called some 1-888 number as directed by OPP
- Filled out about 5 pages of paperwork (Checking Canada411.com, canadaonline.about.com, GEO Warehouse, and thebsuniesstherapist.com multiple times for addresses, forms, phone numbers and postal codes.)
- Waited by the phone for a return call from an OPP officer. (Whom by the way was incredibly nice, informative and to the point... ahh... like a fresh summer breeze)
- Made appropriate notes on post-its and attached to documents, so 'guarantor' can sign here, here and here...
- Warned 'The Other Liz' that we have known each other for 13 years for when they call to confirm my identity... still have to email KT...

So how come in movies getting a forged or illegally obtained passport is so easy? In the... um... second last novel I read, this couple had shiny new Canadian passports within an hour, (of course at the hands of a master document forger).

Hmm, so today I still have to:

-Lie on the couch and read, 'To Kill A Mockingbird' so far it's excellent. If only all the classics were this readable and enjoyable.
- Go to volleyball, and afterwards have drinks with friends
- Make dinner
- Have a nap

However I should:
- Get new joggies for volleyball
- Have PF sign passport documentation

I think I'll do that next week. Once signed I will have to stand in line at the Windsor Passport Office for 3 hours. (That's how long it took 'The Other Liz' to get her passport ordered.) I'll do that on Tuesday...
Life is good. I have to go and get started on that nap, it's almost noon...

Check, check, check

Moving right along!

Today I accomplished many small things including:

- Walked the dog and went to the gym
- Made 4 X the mac and cheese recipe. That is a whopping 48 ounces of cheese! Note to self: Don't work out arms at the gym when you have 48 ounces of cheese to grate, as arms will feel like cheese afterwards...
- Went to the library and picked up the classic, 'To Kill A Mockingbird' of which I have not read, so don't ruin it for me if you have.... thanks....
- Emailed Many Important People
- General Home Duties as per housewife manual
- Finally saw ma seour and gave her the birthday gift

I really happy about the library. I also picked up some fluffy novels by Sandra Brown and Tami Hoag (I think that's the spelling). After that I'm going to re-read the Harry Potter book that will be a movie in the summer (can't wait). I gorged the novel rather than read it, so I have to do a re-read.

I absolutely, positively have to start on the Missing Passport Problem. Tomorrow. I promise!

Multiple thoughtlings

I don't think 'thoughtlings' is a real word, but oh well!

Yesterday seemed like a Sunday as Billy was home from work. That means it seems like Monday to me... hm, I like that idea, only a few more days until the week-end again. I think this week-end we are going to try to zip to London, (Ontario, not England, that would take significantly more than a zip...) to visit Billy's cousin, wife and their kids. Actually I think the plan is to leave at like 6 am to be there for 8 to watch one of the kids' play hockey. That will be fun. I also have the out of town buyers coming back on Sunday to view a home for the second time, and then an open house in Kingsville after. Hmm, busy, loaded week-end already. Fun though...

Today's picture is of Billy's cousin's son from a few years back. What a great picture!

So I realized today that it is already January 9th and I've already read 3 books, (Frankenstein Book 2 by Dean Koontz, Lucifer Gospel by someone who writes about as well as my 11 year old niece, and Split Second by David Baldacci - I've read better...) and none have been a classic novel, therefore today I shall 'get thee to a library'... a nunnery is out of the question...

Today is also a perfect day to make home made mac and cheese. Billy is working late, and is having left overs for dinner. This little cooking adventure should take me a couple of hours. By the way, I'm not a fan of weighing cheese, I have however, learned to weigh the cheese before it is shredded... Brilliant!

I know that this post seems incredibly ADD - ish, so sorry about that...

I think that Billy and I may scrap our upcoming plans to go to Florida. (He has never been to Disney World or any other Florida attractions...) We may instead venture to Hawaii and Tahiti in the late fall. We'll have to check the finances. I just can't justify paying $3,500 US for a week at a Disney resort, (including passes) but not including chow nor travel. We'd also be staying for up to 2 weeks, and well, you get the point. I'm kind of in the mindset that let's do the things now that we won't be able to do in 20+ years. When we're in our 60's I hope that we're still able to surf, kayak, hike, do zip lines, snorkel, rent scooters, etc., but the odds are we'll be limited. So let's save the walking tour of the Vatican gardens, a gondola in Venice, Disney parks, and all inclusive, lie on the beach type of vacations when that's all we can physically do. I hope that we'll always be able to golf... So anyways, we'll see. We almost booked a trip last year for next week to go to Australia and New Zealand, but we didn't. Good thing I guess. More financially responsible...

Hawaii is great motivation to go the gym. Here is a picture from our cruise to Hawaii from 2003. I hope to look like this again.... Note to self: next time someone is taking a picture of me in a bikini: Suck It In! haha, oh well...

Resolutions are going well. I'll like to try some new recipes, and drink more wine... Hmm, that seems like something I'll try tonight!

Week-end wrap up

I had a very busy week-end. I showed about 20 homes to out of town buyers. Davey was over on Saturday night for dinner and some drinks and we went to Mom G's for prime rib last night. (3rd prime rib in the last 10 days...)

Billy is home from work today as he worked New Years' Day, so I'm slinking around the house in my super incredible ninja fashion, and of course he is still sound asleep... oh I just heard him let out the dog... It's always strange for me when he is home on a non-week-end day. It plays havoc with my OCDish non-schedule of life working very little and from home. I'll just pretend it is a Saturday. That's easy!

Hmm, what else... Belated H.B. to my sister who turned 44 yesterday. That means I'll be 34 this summer... I hope you had a good one!

Well I hear Billy in the kitchen, so I should go see what he is up to...

Busy Day

I had a pretty busy day, showing many, many homes to out of town buyers. However, I did have time to snap a picture, (jeez I love my new camera...) of a very rare, very real, (no tricks here folks... and NO it is not a cat, for real!) albino squirrel in Belle River. This is actually the second albino squirrel I've taken a picture of in B.R., but I can't seem to locate the first one. Seriously they are common in B.R., I asked a client of mine a couple of years back, and apparently they are no big deal... By the way, one time 'friends' visited from TN and they couldn't believe the size of our squirrels. They are enormous comparatively...
The second picture today is one I found of me when looking for the original picture of the elusive white squirrel. I look a little stunned, I thought it was pretty funny. This picture was taken about 3 years and 15 lbs ago, look at my roots! Hahaha! Life is good! Have another glass of wine Liz.... More chat tomorrow!

A picture a day...

Hmm, what picture to post, let me search...
This is one of my favs. In Goderich there is a an old train bridge, which was changed into a walking trail that spans across the Maitland River. When Halia was about 3 months old, (about 1 1/2 ago) we camped at Point Farms and spent hours walking the trails. We were looking below (way down...) and turned back to see the pooch was pooped. So cute, what a great day!

I love a list!

If you know me, (on any level, really) you may know that I love a good list. I list just about everything. A great book if you're bored is The Book of Lists, (I have the 1974 edition at the house in Tennessee, always a great conversations starter, lists may include: most deaths ordered by a dictator, famous women that have had abortions, most frequently lines used to avoid a traffic ticket, etc...)

So anyways, I thought I would list some little known factoids about me. Here goes, (remember these are just off the top of my head, if I have to think I'll quit)

- I hate parsnips, liver, caviar and sushi, but will try anything, have not tried oysters, but they look disgusting
- In the last few years I have come to love extra double butter on movie popcorn
- The first time I rode a two wheeler, it had no seat
- I enjoy cleaning the cooktop on our stove, shiny clean!
- I rarely get sick, although Billy would argue with that...
- I know a lot about aromatherapy and use it everyday
- The best essay I ever wrote was in 4th year University and was about the Klondike goldrush
- I failed the second part on my first year Anthropology class - I never bought the text book, wrote the midterm, or attended more than 2 classes - I still wake up worried that I'll fail that class... hahaha
- I love my new camera
- I'm not a big phone talker
- I still love reruns of Seinfeld
- Raw chicken grosses me out almost enough to become a vegetarian, don't get me started on veal or slaughterhouses
- The best book I ever read was Gone With The Wind
- The guy who played Rhett Butler in the movie, Clark Gable is one of the most unattractive men I've ever seen, and the words 'icky elf'' pops into my head
- Christopher Plummer in the Sound of Music is the dreamiest man ever! (I know that's weird)
- I'll read anything that involves a mystery about - doctors, lawyers, CIA, FBI, ATF, KGB, you get the point
- The hardest book I've ever had to read dealt with the Enlightenment period in Western Europe
- My favorite video game is SSX Tricky for playstation, my character snowboarder is Elise
- I've never snowboarded, and suck at, and therefore abhor skiing
- I can't spell receive, receipt and definitely without spellchecker correcting me
- I hate, I mean hate Ray Romano's voice and therefore have not seen more than 10 seconds of Everybody Loves Raymond, but I did see Ice Age 1 & 2, and his voice did bother me, but not as much as I thought.
- I wish we had a new couch and love seat
- I love it when Billy touches my hair, unless it's dirty

That's it, I paused and started to think - that's no good! So I should finish by saying that I did complete my GST and income tax. Of course I still have to send it to be calculated, I'm not that ambitious. I like being done early so I can add anything that I may come across in the next month or so.
It's going to be a great week-end, I hope y'all have a good one!
Billy just told me that the Team Canadian Juniors won the Gold againt Russia this afternoon - Way to go boys! (Hockey by the way... they beat out the US a couple of days ago, barely)

Taking care of business

Here's what I've accomplished in the last couple of days:

-I have cleaned out the car - it actually was no big deal.
-Had 2 of the 3 kids sleep over last night, and Miss M.M. and I made a tie-dye shirt that came out awesome - I wish it was mine... if it was larger I would tell her that it fell apart in the washer, then keep it for myself.
-Went to the office to pick up bullsh!t stickers for all signage as per new bullsh!t MLS regulations - of course not all stickers were available, so I have to go in again next week... Also picked up General Expense Statements so as I can complete GST... then taxes...
-Cleaned off bulletin board - including: office phone numbers from August 2005, MLS stats from September 2006, a bunch of papers about free trip to Vegas, receipts necessary to do GST, MLS number for a client whom I sold a house to in August, U of T car stickers, Billy's friends' email addresses (they are in his hotmail...) and finally the complete NLF schedule.
-Went grocery shopping and resisted urge to buy a magazine with an anorexic May Kate Olsen on it - my will power is amazing, the force is strong with me...
-Cleaned out some of the filing cabinet.
-Determined total amount spent in 2005 on phone, internet, gas, hydro, hot water tank rental, and water - was on average $12.09 per month higher than 2004 - need this to do taxes as well, as I work from home.
-Started to shred old bills and statements - I tried to convince Miss M.M. that it was fun, but that only last about 10 minutes, I have about an hours' worth to do...
-Printed form regarding 'misplaced' passport, and have seriously *thought* about filing police report...
-All regular household duties - laundry, dishes, recycling, etc...
-Completed priliminary planning for 14 showings this week-end to out of town buyers. Shall map out and schedule appointments tomorrow.

I'm feeling seriously less overwhelmed, and I'm going to start on my GST, (and maybe taxes) in a few minutes. Scratch, scratch, scratch!

Wednesday, January 03, 2007

Ahh

Okay, I just found out that my sister was right! You can still cross the border with regular ID, the new rules only affect flying into the US!

Whew! I still have to get on that, I think I have to file a police report... Ugh!

Some pics

Here are some pictures, as part of my resolution. Halia is a total comfort monger. As soon as I take anything out of the dryer and drop it on the bed to fold she jumps right up and settles on the clothes. Telling her to get off, or not to jump up is useless, she believes it is her God given right to lie on the clean, warm laundry.
Halia also has to be near or on someone when she is sleepy. If you move, she'll grunt to let you know you disturbed her. This picture is Halia and Billy on the couch, watching the tribute to Yzerman last night.
Finally, there was a full moon last night, and as it passed thought our back window it looked huge. It was so bright!

Rats! Ugh!

So I merrily cruised through the holidays, with my biggest concern being what snacks to make, and if my dress pants need ironing. Now real life sets in.

I saw on CTV (Canadian news, of which I don't care for...) that the new passport rules come into effect on January 23rd (I think...) Well this is not good for me, as I 'misplaced' my passport a few months back.

This is not like me. If you ask me where anything is in this house I can tell its location within inches. If you need to find an obscure picture on the computer, no problem, I can find it. If you require the sales receipt for the stove purchased in '03, including user manual and warranty, give me 10 seconds and it will be in your hand. So, now you can see why this drives me nuts - not even considering that if I started today to get a new passport, because it is 'lost' I have to jump through many more bureaucratic hoops, and would probably not receive the document until April or May.

This makes going to dinner at Mexican Village, going shopping at Ikea, and going to Tennessee an impossibility. My sister thought the new rules don't come into effect until later this year... I hope that she is right.

Here are things that I hope to accomplish this week:

-Start the passport process - oh that will be fun...
-Have the 3 kids sleep over.
-Make super awesome, incredible homemade mac n'cheese - double the recipe and share with my Mom and Mom G.
-Clean out the car - it's a hot mess
-Resolve Tennessee banking and billing issues - I have to wait on PF, but it's well under way.
-Do taxes - I'm self employed so that involves going through about a thousand receipts - no problem though, because I'm incredible organized, taxes should only take about two hours.
-Do GST - I have to do this before the taxes, as it part of the organizational process.
-Get week-end showings for out of town buyer prepared, oh, better start today...

Hmm, now I feel a little overwhelmed. I think once I get the passport thing started I'll feel a little less anxious...

Tuesday, January 02, 2007

And so it begins!

Ahh, 2007. I started off the year with a ridiculously undeserved and huge hangover. Luckily, (see, see, looking on the bright side...) the pooch was up until 2 am, and was quite content to be in bed with me most of the day...

It was a great night, except for the fact that Billy was on call. He had a ton of calls during the day, and had just enough time to get home, shower, and change before our guests started arriving.

Dinner was fantastic, (if I do say so myself) a huge prime rib, salad, roasted veggies and tiramisu for dessert. Tons of snacks and way too many cocktails. (Wine decanter and aerator worked great!)

I can't believe it, but we busted out Dance Dance Revolution... and played all night. Even funnier and more challenging when alcohol is added. I did not dance enough to offset the food I consumed...

The boys did the hot tub thing when the rain finally let up and it turned out to be a pretty nice night.

At about 2 am Billy got a call for people stuck in an elevator downtown, (half hour away). Our guests were just starting to leave, so the timing wasn't terrible, although it would have been better if there was no call at all. Here's some advice: If you see 13 people on an elevator, don't get on it. You will become intimately acquainted with said people until the time a mechanic can let you out. Also, don't be surprised if said mechanic is in a bad mood...

So I'm having problems leaving comments on posts, so here's some comments: DD, thanks for the advice, I will not ignore bad behavior, you are very right, also will be easier on myself, (it can only make me happier - right?) Happy New Year to you and the SC. Beth, Happy New Year, thanks for coming over, feel free to call if you have an urge to boogie!
