I recently found out that friends of mine are having a baby boy. That always makes me think of baby names. Besides getting a tattoo, there's not too many things in life that are as permanent as a name. Very important.
I don't personally know anyone who has given their child an outrageous name. Well, not really, here's some I know:
- Tigh (pronounced 'tie', very cute boy...)
- Madison Gerald (Gerald is the middle name of a gorgeous little girl, it was the first name of her deceased grandfather)
- Hailey Scott (another gorgeous girl, Scott is her dad's first name)
- Phoenix Aurora (Hailey's sister, middle name after maternal Grandmother who was Native American...)
- -------- Amy (a friend of mine, pronounced ---------, her parent's made it up.)
- Terry Scott (that's my mom... Scott was my Grandfather's Grandfather's middle name, and he was named after a family friend - Winfield Scott - apparently someone well known and respected in California)
- Terry Barker (that's my sister. Barker is my maternal grandmother's maiden name)
- Elizabeth Scott (that's me... see above)
Okay this last one is the kicker... my maternal Grandmother's name was Patricia Charles Barker. She was allowed to choose her name when she was about 5. She perhaps chose Patricia as she was born on St. Patrick's day, and nobody knows where Charles came from. (Apparently she hated her name as an adult and enrolled in college as 'Terry'....)
So most of the above strange names are not from this current generation. (except Madison, Phoenix, Tigh and Hailey) People are seemingly turning away from traditional names. It is very acceptable for girls to have boy's names, and you don't see any boys today names Sydney, Taylor, Kelsey or Cameron although those are traditionally boys' names...
Hmmm
So there are some really crazy baby names out there. Crazy spellings. I like names that are significant for family reasons. I'm quite happy with the middle name Scott. It means something. It carries on life.
The most traditional names I like for boys are:
- James (Sounds strong, and I love Jamie for a girl or a boy...)
- Michael (my husband's real name)
- Harrison (don't like Harry though...)
- Scott (for obvious reasons...)
Names that I like for boys that are newer include:
- Giger (sounds German - think he's the guy that created Alien)
- Gage (kid from Pet Sematary)
- League (made that up, I think it's cool)
- Seven (of course from Seinfeld, but it also makes me think of the creepy movie...)
- Cause (just heard that one, I like it!)
- Camden (read a book that took place in Camden, I like it!)
- Porter (kid from Desperate Housewives)
- Caleb
- Ethan
- Aiden
For girls I like:
- Jamie
- Mary (I know, but I like it, it's so wonderfully simple)
- McKenna
- Lauren (my favorite)
- Harvest
- Autumn
- Lake
- Rain
- Summer (are you seeing a theme here?)
Well that's today's thoughts anyway. I won't be naming any kids in the future, (at least not mine...)
